Schools Growing Competition

On Saturday 28th June Byrkley Garden Centre played host to hundreds of local schoolchildren and their dwarf kidney bean plants, which they had grown from seed, for the judging of this year’s School’s Growing Competition.

With 19 local schools (from Abbots Bromley, Burton, Coton in the Elms, Fradley, Hilton, Horninglow, Marchington, Midway, Kings Bromley, Newhall, Rangemore, Rugeley, Stanton, Stapenhill, Swadlincote & Winshill) and almost 1500 children taking part, this year’s event was our biggest yet and competition was fierce.  However, we had a great day with plenty of things going on to keep everyone entertained whilst the judges (Ed James from Heart FM, and David Lock and Wendy Prestidge from Byrkley Garden Centre) reached their difficult decision.

First prize (a child’s wicker settee donated by Burton Glass, and a selection of children’s gardening tools) went to 5 year old Benjamin Sharp from Newhall Infant & Nursery School, with Cloe Styler from Eureka Primary School and Jamie Gregory from Hilton Primary School taking 2nd and 3rd prizes.  As well as a selection of goodies for themselves, each child won Byrkley Garden Centre vouchers for their respective schools (£150 Vouchers for 1st prize, £100 Vouchers for 2nd prize and £75 Vouchers for 3rd prize).  There were free goody bags for the first 300 children to bring their plant into the Centre and one child from each of the 19 schools was awarded a Best in School prize.   The coveted teacher’s prize went to Miss A Harvey from Stanton Primary School, and the special prize of a wooden bench for the school playground was awarded to Western Springs Primary School in Rugeley for having the highest percentage of entries.
