The Schools Growing Competition

Once again, Byrkley Garden Centre is proud to be taking part in the National Schools Growing Competition, which for 2007 is to grow a pot of carrots.  We have over 700 children from 11 local schools taking part in this year’s competition, which is organised by the National Garden Centre Association in conjunction with Peter Seabrook, the Gardening Editor of The Sun newspaper, with sponsorship from Thompson & Morgan and Miracle-Gro.

Each child has been given carrot seeds, compost and a container, and representatives from Byrkley Garden Centre have been along to the schools to provide planting help and growing guidelines to the children.

The regional judging day is at Byrkley Garden Centre on Saturday 23rd June 2007 and the pots of carrots will be judged for yield, uniformity and quality.  Our regional winner will then be entered into the national final of the competition to be judged by Peter Seabrook.  There will be prizes at regional and national levels for both the individual children and their schools.

This competition is a great chance for the children to learn how to sow seeds, thin out the seedlings and eventually pick and eat their own carrots.
