2008 School's Growing Competition
Following the great success and popularity of last year’s Carrot growing competition, we have decided to stay with the vegetable theme and this year’s competition is to grow a Dwarf French Bean plant in a pot.
We are very keen to support the national campaign encouraging healthy eating, and feel that this competition is an excellent way to help children learn about growing (and eating!) their own vegetables. Representatives from Byrkley Garden Centre will be visiting the schools in early April to provide each child with Dwarf French Bean seeds, compost and a container, they will also be helping the children with the planting of the seeds as well as giving out growing guidelines.
Judging day will be on Saturday 28th June at Byrkley Garden Centre which, as in previous years, will be a fun-filled day for all the family. Final details have yet to be confirmed, but Ed James of Heart FM will be here to announce the lucky winners and we are planning a variety of entertainment for the whole family to join in.
There will be some fantastic prizes for the lucky winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd) and their schools, as well as a “Best in School” prize for each school and a brand new category for this year - “Best Teacher’s Entry”! There will also be a goody bag for the first 300 children that bring in their own entry on judging day.
This competition is a great chance for children to learn how to sow seeds, thin out the seedlings and eventually pick and eat their beans.
